How to get Combined ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 Training

Internal Auditors performing a Laboratory Audit

Integrated Management Systems (IMS) are popular nowadays but Internal Auditor training can be problematical.

They make great sense from an Audit Programme Manager’s viewpoint but can cause difficulties for the Internal Auditor.

Because frequently internal auditors do not have sufficient knowledge of the differences in objectives and requirements of the individual Standards concerned.

The end result is that failures in the systems are missed and are ‘low hanging fruit’ (1) for certification bodies (CBs) and supplier auditors.

How do we ensure adequate training for Internal Auditors of Integrated Management Systems (IMS)?

In this post we have limited ourselves to IMSs based on ISO 14001, the Environmental Standard, and ISO 45001, the OH&S Standard.  Other combinations of ISO Standards into an IMS are frequently used (2).

Adequate training is about informing your prospective auditors of the requirements of both Standards without a lot of unnecessary duplication (as is the case, with few exceptions, for conventional classroom training – here e-learning is a clearly superior option).

With our Courses, here are your options:

For IMS Internal Auditors

A combination of two courses is needed.  Individual Internal Auditor Certificates are issued for each Standard.  A combined IMS Certificate is available on request and without an extra charge.

Classroom equivalent

ISO 14001 Internal Auditor Certification (#007  12 hrs)

ISO 45001 Internal Auditor Extension  (#037X  8 hrs)

ISO 45001 Internal Auditor Certification  (#037  14 hrs)

ISO 14001 Internal Auditor Extension  (#007X  8 hrs)

22 hrs

And if you have Internal Auditors already trained in one of the Standards:

Here the Extension Course for the other Standard is all that’s required.

(1) ’Low hanging fruit’ is the expression we use to describe those avoidable errors and omissions that competent Audit Programme Managers (APM) should be avoiding.  They are the findings in external audits that APMs should be blamed for.

(2) While the combination of three Standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001) into a single IMS is regularly done, we have seen six Standards integrated into one system.

At that point, the management of the IMS, and especially of the internal audit programme, becomes challenging and requires one or more full-time persons to manage it.

Generally, we at deGRANDSON do not favour such combinations (beyond ISO 14001 and ISO 45001).

It is difficult to maintain control of such systems and to have confidence in the effectiveness with which each of the Standards is being applied.  You will be audited by your Certification Body against each standard individually and, at a practical level, you may struggle to find an adequate supply of internal auditors competent to undertake planned combined internal audits.

It is auditors with good knowledge of one standard but poor knowledge of another that really cause the problems.  They just don’t know what they’re missing.

InISO 21001 ISO 29993 ISO 29994 October 2021 we secured certification to three education-related ISO Standards.  We now have a university-grade management system in place conforming to the requirements of  …

  • ISO 21001, Educational Organizational Management System,
  • ISO 29993, Learning Services outside formal Education,  and
  • ISO 29994, Learning Services – additional requirements for Distance Learning.

We have chosen ISO 21001 certification because, unlike IRCA and Exemplar badges (which in our opinion are commercially compromised), it is based on independent third-party assessment.  It is a ‘university grade’ standard in use globally by schools, colleges, and universities to demonstrate their competence.
